Emmerich prepares the surface of his paintings meticulously, creating differing textures for each element in the composition. Oil colors in earthy tones are applied in transparent layers so that colors previously applied blend with the surface paint. Later, the surface paint is rubbed back in certain areas to reveal additional highlights from the color beneath.

Emmerich’s reverence for nature is apparent in these carefully crafted and spatially precise visions of natural landscapes.
